EXPLORE: Prowling Grand Manan Island by sail, foot and horse, 1891

Imagine taking 6 hours to travel 16 miles from North Head to southern Head!

Imagine catching the tides and the wind to slowly sail your way to visit Grand Manan. It’s 1891 and Samuel Adams Drake is exploring the coast of Maine from Kittery to Eastport with a final stop at Grand Manan Island. Times were different back then and the following account contains lengthy descriptions of places, people and scenery, a far cry from on the spot photos taken on your cell phone and sent almost instantly to Google+, Twitter, or Facebook.

Grand Manan! Different than today, but still a tourist mecca 120 odd years later. Enjoy the trip!
